Magellan Old Customer December 29, 2008 Kin Man Wong (Atlanta, GA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product which I think is up-to-date latest model from Magellan make me a bit of disappointing. I find that this model's instruction, on the fly going steps, and the provided function are not much better than the Magellan Old model. Migth be they think their product is much AI, but I have found it is not human useable, and sometimes not make sense. The time between the old model and this new model, I have temp use Garmin 200 the cheap one; but I have found thsi cheap one could let me call the shot to address the location. But the Magellan couldn't mke it. I would suggest Magellan next model shall have both hands function, one is more AI for new user or people just want pick and go in their small town, another shall keep the function could let user to control more in deep. For example, I couldn't locate "Maths Airport Parkway" in GA, this GPS even not me to type-in the name of the road, The GPS always smartly shown the "Maths Aitport Road" and don't let me type the "Parkway". It made me and my wife getting crazy. Actually, the "Parkway" is continues of the "Road", unfortunately, it can't done its job. About POI function (point of interests), I can't locate "North GA outlet mall" by select "Mall", the location is very common and most GA people love to visit the place, it is locate along I-400. This use up another 30 mins to access the location again. The size of the street name is too small, by compare with the Garmin 200. I would recommand at least one point bigger. One good point is the reaction/responds of the GPS is good and quick. So, I would say this product is designed by group of hardware guy more than a group of market/customer researcher. They still has lot of design and improve space ahead. Finally, I still support Magellan in the furture as much as I could.
Brand New and Doesn't Work November 13, 2008 J. Smith (Washington State) 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought a Magellan 5310 today. It will be going back to Costco tomorrow. When I set it up and pushed the On button, I got a screen about safety while driving. I then pushed OK and nothing happened. It would never go to another screen. Then when I tried to shut it off it stayed on. Even with the power off of it, it won't shut down. So, it's back in the box with the screen lit up like the middle of day. That will surely wear the battery down to nothing. This is my second attempt at buying a GPS unit (previously I bought a Garmin and it gave me nothing but problems too). Obviously, the technology isn't there to produce a product that is of value to consumers. It's disappointing because my wife really needed it for a trip she's taking tomorrow. But I'm not buying one ever again. After two tries, I'm not happy with this particular technology or the Magellan product. I really thought that buying top of the line this time would make a difference. It didn't.
Not Bad November 11, 2008 P. Steiner (NY) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this item and have been using it regularly, it tends to try to send me on some strange routes some times with many turns but when I had absolutely no idea where I was going it was usually fairly good. Had a couple of addresses that were not located correctly and it sometimes does not know specific towns if they are too small. Graphics are good, traffic alerts seem generally pointless to me and not usefull. Unit does recalculate routes preety quickly and has been a lifeline on those side street for the most part. Haven't used any others so no comparison from me.
5310 Customer Service is Crap on a Cracker November 9, 2008 J. Holt (USA) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Sirs, I recently purchased a 5310 GPS on 10/30/2008 at Costco for my HVAC business and I was shocked to learn the 5310 GPS unit with a production date of 10/01/2008 has a map that is from 2006/2007 and the update due in the first quarter of 2009 will cost $[...] more, and would not be provided for me at no cost, I learned this after speaking to your resolution specialists. This is my second unit I also own a 4040, I did buy the upgrade for this unit 6 months ago. Any reasonable person would expect to receive the latest software with a new unit, the Garmen units we own are provided with the most current software at NOCHARGE, so when I return this unit even though I like it because of its intuitive capability you have no one to blame but your poor customer service and unrealistic company policies. So in closing I repeat the 5310 and their Customer Service is Crap on a Cracker J.Holt
Buyer Beware - Good GPS Though October 17, 2008 Jay Marcucci (Long island, NY) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased this unit after evaluating several different vendors and models. It was exactly what I wanted however - PLEASE NOTE THE UNIT DOES NOT HAVE BLUETOOTH NOR VOICE COMMANDS. Amazon has yet to change the descriptions as someone else noted this months ago. The unit works well and I have done the free OS upgrade . Just be aware that Amazons prices fluctuate on this unit - I paid $380 and two days later it was $349 now it's $352 so check often as they do not do price adjustments.
