Simple, effective security February 29, 2008 J. Lewis (Houston) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Inexpensive but well-made, this Disconnect Switch is simple to install in a couple of minutes. We put one on my wife's minivan to secure it after an attempted break-in and it works great! Unscrew the knob about one turn and, while a small amount of current through the fused jumper maintains radio and other memory functions, high-current functions like the starter are totally disabled. Unscrew the knob completely out of the switch and take it with you for maximum security and as a reminder you have disabled the system. My wife has already blown two fuses, forgetting she had disconnected the battery. It works as advertised: but with the switch open, turn the key, the fuse blows, everything goes dead, and you spend the next ten minutes re-programming the radio. Popping a fuse doesn't hurt anything, but volatile memory will disappear. You can still tighten the knob, closing the switch and start the engine, so it's only a convenience and not a safety issue. If you buy one of these switches, lay in a good stock of 15A mini fuses too . . . you will blow several before you learn the new starting drill!
