Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Neither deep foliage nor steep canyons will faze the rugged Garmin eTrex Vista HCx navigator. Equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, the unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Vista HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. The Vista HCx also includes a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even when you're standing still, along with a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

Adding maps to the Vista HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Vista HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet.

Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Vista HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Vista HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.

The Vista HCx basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing, 1,000 waypoints with names and graphic symbols, a built-in patch antenna, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, sun and moon information, and a geocaching mode. The Vista HCx, which runs for up to 25 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
eTrex Vista HCx, basemap, MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Gear for fun   November 23, 2008
Roberta Arden (Twisp, WA USA)
My recent purchase of this Garmin GPS was an exact replacement for one that was so rudely stolen from the front seat of my car. To me it is essential equipment for having fun...my hiking, road trips, and especially geocaching. It's the perfect size for me to carry hiking, reception of this Vista HCX is much better than previous models, and fun to check out what's at the next exit on road trips. It actually does much more than I do, or know how to do, with it, but easy enough once you get used to it. I truly consider it to be essential rather than luxury in my outdoor fun and adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS   November 23, 2008

I bought this unit for Deer hunting in Minnesota and it works great. I would highly recommend this model.

3 out of 5 stars Learning Curve   November 15, 2008
Richard R. Harman (Elkridge, MD United States)
I got lost while hiking a few years ago and decided that I needed to research hand held GPS units. I put that decision off until I started hiking with my kids. After looking at many reviews, I settled on the Garmin Vista HCx. My top priorities were to have a small hand held unit with a highly sensitive GPS receiver (since most of my walks are in forested areas). After thinking about it some more, I thought a color display, the ability to add detailed maps, and a compass would be nice. The Vista HCx was the cheapest Garmin I could find that met all my criteria (and the Amazon reviews were reasonable). I picked one up along with the Garmin topo maps and a micro-sd card and started to play with it. I was impressed with the size of the device along with the quality of the color display. While inside my house, the vista locked onto the GPS satellites quickly which satisfied my sensitivity requirement (and it did a good job under tree cover). I loaded the topo maps onto the device and the display showed the topo details quite nicely. Now why is my rating only 3 stars? In short, the operation of the device was not intuitive. I tinkered with it off and on for 2 weeks at home, while hiking, and while taking walks in the neighborhood. I never figured out how to properly use the device. I think that is the price to pay for adding so many features to more device. With more practice, I'm sure I would have figured the device out. However, that doesn't bode well for those times when you REALLY need it and your facilities are not all in order. If the device had been intuitive, I would have given it 5 stars. So, I returned the Vista and continue my search.

A month ago I replaced my old Garmin Etrex Vista with the new Etrex Vista HCX. My old Vista was great, except when I was in heavily wooded areas or rocky canyons---in other words it was worthless to me as a GPS but priceless at the front entry as a door stop. The new HCX has solved this problem, but I may have to go to Target to get a new door stop as I sold my old GPS.

I can now hike in very heavily wooded, mountainous and deep rock canyon areas in central and southern Mexico and not worry about the signal. This HCX locks into the satellite signals and rarely lets go. The altimeter and compass are very accurate. The battery life is much improved over old units (up to 25 hours on two alkaline batteries). And, you can't beat Amazon pricing and quick delivery-----I got this GPS from Amazon for about $60.00 less than any other vendor's pricing.

In other words, this is a highly functional and useful hiking and biking GPS. What can be done to make it a five-star product:

1. Since this is a routing-capable GPS, add voice prompts for turns. You do get a beep, but that's not useful and, indeed, potentially dangerous if you're behind the wheel of a car if you're constantly looking at the screen, leading me to recommend a separate car-specific unit for a car;
2. The basemap of the Americas is useful, but be aware that Garmin maps are expensive should you desire topographic, street, other country or specialized maps. I did some internet research and found effective workarounds for getting non-Garmin maps on the unit and some reasonably good free maps which would have cost me a total of $500.00 had I bought them from Garmin. Garmin should either lower the price of their maps or provide instructions for loading non-Garmin maps on their units. Slim chance!

The Garmin etrex Vista is every thing promised. Seems to work great, But for me it demands some study and learning.
