This might be a nice gate if it indeed locked. It does not and it takes maybe 2 pounds of pressure to open it. I bought this so I could keep my dogs out of areas in my home, but all they have to do is scratch at the bottom of the gate to open it. There is no reason to use the latch (for lack of a better word) at the top of the gate, becausee it does not latch into anything. There is actually nothing there for the retracting "latch" to latch in to.
I've called the company to request assistance, but I don't think there is anything to be done. The hardware is not there; the closure does not require the "one-touch" - or whatever they call it - latch, because it does not have the ability to lock into anything at all.
It frightens me that it is suggested it could be used at the top of a staircase to keep a baby from falling because if the gate is not mounted in the correct direction - and because it does not lock at all - it would take minimal pressure for a baby to push on the gate and fall.
I will be returning this, and will seek other vendors. I've been a long-time customer of Amazon.com, but this product is worthless in reality, but unfortunately looks very good on their site.

I originally liked this gate very much. I bought two of them. They installed easily and worked well - for a while. It is one year later. The springs on both gates are shot and the gates do not close automatically - sorth of a misnomer for an "auto close" gate. I had to rig a small bungee cord to each gate to pull them closed. The latches on both gates have broken several times. While you can order replacement parts on-line, the original part design is deficient - they should not break so easily! I am an engineer and I know good part design. These are not well engineered. The size and shape of the parts causes them to be weak by design. The materials used in the manufacture of these gates is inferior. Bottom line - this is NOT a durable gate and over time will cost you more money in upkeep to replace broken parts. It is more trouble than it is worth.
Put your hard earned money into a different gate that is made in the USA of quality materials - one that is well designed to endure the many openings and closings that a gate will experience over its lifetime.

We got this gate to keep our minature dachshunds from running off everytime some one came in the front door. We have an entry area that we were able to block off with this gate using the gate with the longer gate extension piece. Now when the kids go in and out the dogs are automatically kept back away from the front door by the autoclosing feature on the gate. The kids don't have to remember to close it and once they are on the other side of the gate they can fiddle around at the front door with it open and we don't have to worry about the dogs getting out.

Our old house has thick baseboards, and each of the four contact points are independently adjustable so it works great.
We have to readjust it fairly often to get the auto-close to work right. I wouldn't call that a problem with the gate - most likely kids jerking it around too much when they open it. When it's working it's awesome.
It wasn't tall enough for our 60 pound dog, so we put it one stair up from the bottom to add 7" in height. Not recommended, but has worked fine for us as we are all healthy and careful.
UPDATE - With some hard use the latch in the middle of the gate broke in half. I called North States and within a couple of days had a new one - no charge - and the gate is good as new. Impressed with North States.

I bought this to block the entrance of the stair way for the safty of our 16 month old daughtor. This is a bit more expensive than other brands in the market but we are glad we picked out this gate. It is durable, made of metal. It is safe, impossible for her to open since it has to be lifted to open. And you don't have to drill wholes to install it. Speaking about safty, we have zero tolerance and this meets the expectation. Highly recommond to parents who seek for gates.
