Still need supervision January 14, 2010 A. Yeung (San Jose, CA USA) We put this on top of our stairs, and very soon we found out that our 12 month old daughter will attempt to climb up the gate by stepping onto the bottom rail, and would fall forward and her leg got caught up in between the bars and got stuck there. This would have been hazardous if she wasn't being supervised/monitored and her leg could have been hurt as well. As such, I'd say even though the gate can prevent the little ones from falling down the stairs, it would still present some problem if they aren't supervised. Also, when the gate is closed and with the sliding mechanism on this gate, your babies' fingers may get jammed between the vertical bars when they stand or lean against the gate holding on to the bars.
Excellent choice January 9, 2010 Ana Carrera (USA) I almost got the Lascal kiddiguard retractable gate, because I liked the idea of hiding the gate when opened, the reviews weren't very good, plus we needed extra parts to install it, etcetera. So we decided on this gate, I couldn't be happier, the design is actually very sleek, so it doesn't bother me to see it, we installed it on top of the stairs, it retracts halfway to open easier, is extra safe and easy to operate. It is great!
Very Good Gate December 19, 2009 Thomas Mangimelli (Atchison,KS) The Evenflow gate seems very sturdy. It was easy to install. It seems to be designed to be very adaptable to different openings at the top of a stairs, but it could also be used in other opening applications. Hopefully it was made in the USA, then I would give it 5 stars.
Perfect for our need! November 27, 2009 Erik Brown (Chicago, IL) This is an excellent "no frills" gate. We previously had a gate with all of the whistles (motion detector and light, latch indicator, etc); however, is was too heavy to attach to the banisters at the top of the staircase in our new house. This gate fit the bill perfectly! Easy to install, well built, and light for a banister we didn't want to ruin.
functional but there are better November 27, 2009 strandaw (WA ,United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have had 3 of the "the first years" metal gates (non-hands free version). Ya, they break consistently at about 1.25 years (those engineers are talented), but they are solid and mount well.
Bought the even-flo plus, as it was available quicker and was cheaper. Not sure if I would do it again or not. Install is OK if you check the directions first. Like all other products, the included screws suck and strip out quickly. The mechanism that prevents the gate from swinging in a direction you do not want is pretty hokey. The First Years metal gate is nice because you just swing it shut like a door. If it clicks then you know it's shut. This one needs to be "placed" shut i.e. you have to close it, align the top and bottom rails into the slots and then squeeze the lever to slide it into the slots and shut the gate. More time if you're going up and down the stairs often.
On the positive side, it looks pleasant, can be painted/stained, and holds up to abuse. My almost-2 year old is about 35 pounds and apparently training to be a wrestler. He started shaking it hard while yelling, got a cousin to help him, and the gate seemed to hold up pretty well. Slats are made alright (previous reviews complained about thin slats-I bought mine locally at toys r us), and it was cheaper than the metal ones.
