Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Who knows more about dog attacks that the mailman? Letter carriers have had to deal with aggresive dogs since Claudius Polonius was delivering rolls of parchment to citizens of the Roman Empire. So what do the experts use to repel dog attacks? Well, the U.S. Postal Service has been using Halt! Since 1966. You might say they have been conducting field tests for over thirty years. Halt! Products use Capsaicin, a naturally occurring extract of peppers, which, when sprayed in a dog's face, causes only temporary, but extreme discomfort for the dog.Think of it as attitude re-adjustment. Halt! Stops him in his tracks, giving you time to move out of danger. Halt!'s pressurized spray is accurate up to 10 feet.

4 out of 5 stars Good Insurance   November 21, 2008

Fortunately I haven't had an occasion to use this product yet. My dogs and I have been attacked twice while walking in my neighborhood, so I won't walk them without some type of pepper spray. I had a different brand and the can only contained .3oz. I emptied the entire can on one dog before he finally gave up attacking my dog. The Halt contains more and the clip on the side holds the can securely. Seems like a good product.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed   October 19, 2008
mary ellen (philadelphia, pa)
As a professional dog walker, my first interest is in the safety of myself and the client dog entrusted to my care. I purchased this product with that in mind. On one occasion, I had a large unleashed dog spot me and my client dog, my first reaction was to calmly try to go the other way, but I could see the unleashed dog was determined to come at us. I stopped, had my HALT in hand and used it (I did feel the stream distance was good),but it did NOT deter the dog. I think I soaked his face, but it did nothing more than squirting water. Thankfully the unleashed dog's owner came out of the house and retrieved his dog, and apologized. I would not purchase this product again, nor would I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Not terribly effective   July 20, 2008

Product is supposed to work up to 10-12 feet, the spray actually reaches 2-3 feet. I was terrorized by a stray dog while trying to unlock my car. It didn't do anything until the dog was practically in my face and then the dog was back after I had entered my car but before I had the motor started.

Not what I paid for.

5 out of 5 stars Halt will repell that barkin' and chargin' dog   June 30, 2008

I purchased Halt to offer some protection as I ride my mountain bike through the woods and onto a back road where several dogs like to chase me. I was bit once and the stupid animal control guy didn't even return my call. I decided to take "control" into my own hands. My first ride with Halt called for it's use, in that I was charged by this little monster that has threatened to bite me in the past. One spray sent this guy away in a hurry. He rolled in the dirt to stop the unpleasantness in his eyes etc. I did not spend the rest of the evening with him but I am trusting that the effects did not last too long. I felt kinda bad about doing it but I figured it was better than him taking a bite outta some little kid and needing to be put down. Hopefully, he will associate all cyclists with this unpleasant experience and will learn to not to charge humans (at least those on bikes).

4 out of 5 stars Limited Range   May 27, 2008

The spray kind of worked. I can usually discourage a dog by just pointing the can at them. However, when I had the opportunity to discharged the repellent, I was a little disapointed with the range. The stream range is actually less than the described 10 to 12 feet. The effective reach was more like 2 to 3 feet! Also for one dog, I had to literally "paint his face" to get him to react.
