4 out of 5 stars Fun for your pet!   June 5, 2010

I got this hay dispenser for my guinea pig. The type that I had before was the kind that you just hang on the outside of the cage. I always had a problem with it making a huge mess on the floor right below it. This one it nice because it is contained inside of the cage. In my opinion, the little door on it is pointless. It's much too small to easily get the hay in. Fortunately, the side panels just snap right on and off and when removed there is plenty of space to put hay in. I would assume that the manufacturers just get rid of the door altogether. Taking off the side panel is easy enough.
It is nice that you can hang it. It doesn't take up too much space when you do.
My guinea pig likes it, It adds a bit of interest to the whole concept of offering hay to your pet.
All in all I am happy I purchased this. I had to look around at quite a few different online stores before I found what I thought to be a decent price on it. The price varies so much from store to store so look around and compare at different places.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but not perfect   March 4, 2010

My wife and I bought this product for our 3 chinchillas. Overall the wheel is fun for them to play with since they can spin the ball while eating. The problem we had was that chinchillas chew on everything, like most rodent family pets, and the outside plastic only snaps onto the metal cage in a few areas. Well after chewing for a week or two the plastic snaps end up chewed as well. In the end we just super glued the plastic back onto the metal cage and havent had a problem since.

Additionally - putting the hay inside the small cage door can be annoying for 2 reasons. 1.) the locking mechanism for the cage door is just the cage interlocking with itself with tension. Its effective for keeping the hay in but resulting in our first cage door breaking since it wasnt obvious how it closed. 2.) its just small and hard to get a large handful of hay into the hole without spilling some of it.

Lastly, I'm not sure that any other product could do a better job, but when our chinchillas pull out the hay, more than what they eat comes out and usually ends up dropping to the floor which ends up being wasted.

Overall - its fun, hangs well, stays closed, but for our chinchillas who chew none stop, it has a few design flaws.

3 out of 5 stars decent   March 3, 2010

I bought this ball because it was suggested to me at the petstore, and it didn't look like there were other options beside food bowls. I initially thought it was cute and a nice idea, but I've never had an animal that required hay. It has a few problems, though I'm not sure how they could be avoided. For one, I can fill the ball up, and within a few hours, all the hay has fallen out and is on the bottom of the cage. When the ball rolls, the hay goes everywhere (including in my bun's litterbox), which is pretty wasteful. I suppose I should pack it more, but I've found that it's more or less impossible to get the hay to fit in the ball as it is shown in the picture.

The wire door stays shut for me, but trying to shove the hay through the little door is a big hassle. You can only put in small handfuls at a time, and it's hard to stick it in without it falling out. I usually opt to open the sides and pack it in. A smaller problem I've encountered from this is the hay will sometimes stick out at weird angles. I worry that my bun will poke himself with it, and am always having to check it to make sure none of the hay is sticking out in a way that could be dangerous. The only option I have for putting the ball in the cage is by hanging it. Standing it up or letting roll around makes an even bigger mess.

All in all, I can look past the flaws, but only because I don't think there is anything else that I could use. I don't have room in my cage for many other types of hay holders. Although this ball is pretty large, I finally managed to get it to sit comfortably in the cage. My bun has fun spinning the ball, so..as long as he's happy!

5 out of 5 stars Great for keeping a tidy cage.   February 17, 2010

I received the hay holder today, within 5 minutes of receiving the package I had it unpacked, assembled, filled with hay, and installed in the guinea pig cage. My piggies seem to love it, then again they love timothy hay so it probably doesn't matter what I put it in. It has only been in their cage a couple of hours and it is already almost empty, so I wish it were a little bit bigger, but I have 2 guinea pigs, it is probably big enough for anyone with just one. Unlike previous methods, this keeps the hay nice and tidy without any to pick up off the floor. I am very happy with it and would recommend it for anyone with guinea pigs.

5 out of 5 stars Great product   February 4, 2010

This resolved the issue of having hay all over the place. The other hay holders would get hay everywhere, but this one keeps the mess at a minimum. This is the third type of hay holder I have bought or made and it the best by far. I also like the fact that the rabbit is being mentally stimulated while eating.
