Product Description For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom--from the ex-husband, freedom from their stuffy suburban home, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed--a puppy. A bouncy, adorable puppy. Instead she gets
Fred. Overweight, middle-aged, a bit smelly and obviously depressed, Fred is light-years from perky. But he does manage to put Nina in the path of Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger-by-a-decade neighbor. Alex seems perfect--he's a sexy, seemingly sane, surprisingly single E.R. doctor--but the age gap convinces Nina that anyone but Alex would be better relationship material. But with every silver-haired stiff she dates, the more she suspects it's the young, dog-loving doc she wants to sit and stay!

Funny and FUN December 2, 2008 Mellowme (Tampa,Fl) Jennifer Cruise is GREAT...I have read so many of her books and they are great reads. If you want something light and playful, she has the books. Quick reads but Fun..
light and fun November 14, 2008 Maya Rose (Houston, TX) This won't make you think about the deeper questions in life, but it will help you have an enjoyable evening! Fun!
funny, sexy, romance - with a dog November 8, 2008 Antoinette Gygi (WEST Virginia) Classic Jennifer Crusie - two unlikely characters living right above/below each other. Fred the dog is a riot, and the perfect "extra" character. I love the "slightly oler woman"/younger man concept - a woman not so confident in her appearance, and the guy who disagrees, thinks she's hot just like she is! As usual while listening to Jennifer's books, I frequently laughed out loud, and replayed a few lines to be sure I heard what I thought I heard!
Fred's Book - Wonderful Read! October 23, 2008 M (California) Fred Askew "part Bassett, part Beagle, part darling," Nina Askew, and Alex Moore. Fred's the new dog (common theme in many of Crusie's novels) Nina adopted to cheer her up. He is great...not cheerful...not "Prozac with a tail"...but exactly what Nina needed. No one can write a dog with as much character and spirit as Jennifer Crusie! Nina's inspiration as to how to help Fred take care of his "calls of nature" while she's at work is priceless - the fire-escape to the lawn...loved it! Nina is a great person reconstructing her life after going through a divorce at thirty-nine. She decided to leave her ex, Guy, because she didn't want to live the life he had created...that she never wanted in the first place. She goes through the standards: Who am I? Who do I want to be? What am I interested in? etc. Smart with a great sense of humor. The story opens just after her fortieth birthday. Alex is a doctor ten years younger than Nina. He falls in lust at first sight, and then love quickly thereafter. He makes the mistake of trying to give Nina what he thinks she wants (the old life she walked away from with Guy - even a house in the same area!). The secondary characters, Max (Alex's brother), Charity (Nina's best friend), and Norma Lynn (upstairs neighbor) are wonderful. Ms. Crusie always provides three-dimensional, well-rounded, secondary characters that add to the greatness of the novels she writes. Well worth the price and effort to obtain, and the time it will take to read. I've read this countless times, and will continue to until I'm physically unable to!
What a geat story September 26, 2008 surprised reader (USA) My first Jennifer Cruise book and I loved it. I found the audio version available at my local libary and decided to check it out. I really it less than a day finding it hard to turn off. A really nice story about a 40 year old newly divorcee, Nina looking to live a simplier life instead of the corporate life she had with her successful husband. She meets her neighbor Alex, a 30 year old doctor, who isn't so much into long term relationships. Both are almost instantly attracted to eachother, but have issues with the age difference. Nina feeling that she isnt' attractive enough and Alex feeling like he isn't successful enough (like her ex-husband). Great supporting characters included Alex's older brother Max, and Nina's best friend Charity and the dog Nina adopted, Fred. I never saw a pet be such a central character to a book, but Fred is a fabulous add. The book has lots of humor, a few steamy scenes, but also presents a lovely story about a couple and working through their fears. A nice light read and I will be definetly checking out more books by this author.
