Product Description
Here is the story of Corporate Social Responsibility---what it means, where it came from, where it is going, what it requires of business. Told in an eyewitness, I-was-there style by a pioneer of the study of CSR in the nation's business schools, it takes the reader through a half century of corporate scandals and fierce struggles over corporate ethics---from Ralph Nader's 1960s Campaign GM to today's white collar crimes at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, and other Wall Street giants. It lays bare the values that drive corporate culture, explores the motivational depths of corporate strategy and policy, demonstrates how biological impulses can lead business decision makers astray, questions the relevance and ethical commitment of business school education, reveals the spiritual side of management life, and holds out hope that the New Millennium will see improvement in the ethical performance of business. William C. Frederick is one of the founders of the study of Corporate Social Responsibility in the United States and initiated some of the key concepts and analytic categories. His books include Business and Society, Social Auditing, and Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation. He was president of The Society for Business Ethics and The Society for Advancement of Socio-Economics, and chaired the Social Issues in Management division of The Academy of Management. He conducted studies of management education in Spain, Italy, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Australia, and designed and taught programs for executives in U. S. corporations. He was dean of the business schools at the University of Kansas City and the University of Pittsburgh. He received a PhD in economics and anthropology from the University of Texas. Corporation, Be Good! draws on the author's half-century of thinking about the social and ethical responsibilities of the modern corporation.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever   July 1, 2007

This book was used as the text in an MBA Corporate Social Responsibility course. This text was probably the worst I have ever had to edure in my entire adult life. The book drags on and on, rarely making a salient point relating to business and social responsibility. I was not alone in this opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A superb primer for all business school teachers!   August 11, 2006
Evelyn M. Pierce (Pittsburgh, PA)
I teach in a top-twenty MBA program where we are encouraged to incorporate discussion across the curriculum about ethical practices in corporate America. Dr. Frederick presents a thorough historical account of the study of corporate ethics that prepares me to guide my students through the current landmine of big-business greed and coverup. I especially appreciate Dr. Frederick's analogies to the natural world--this context makes it easier to understand how seemingly small, inconsequential leadership choices can create overwhelming problems--or successes--as a corporation matures. I will be putting this on my recommended book list for all my students to better understand how they, tomorrow's leaders, can promote value-driven strategies and policies that create respectful environments for their employees, customers, and communities.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless account of a pivotal career   February 5, 2006

William Frederick is the dean of corporate social responsibility. He occupied a front row seat over decades of evolution in corporate values. He simultaneously led the field of study while acting as the principal arbiter of what consistutes the "good" corporation. In my own work as a Wall Street Journal commentator on ethics and values in Corporate America, I stood on a theoretical foundation established by Prof. Frederick. His latest book adds an empirical plank to the theoretical foundation on which two generations of students and corporate leaders now stand. "Corporation, Be Good!" is an accessible and engaging account of the movement by which corporations came to recognize their role not solely as economic instituions, but as social institutions as well.
