This book was used as the text in an MBA Corporate Social Responsibility course. This text was probably the worst I have ever had to edure in my entire adult life. The book drags on and on, rarely making a salient point relating to business and social responsibility. I was not alone in this opinion.
A superb primer for all business school teachers! August 11, 2006 Evelyn M. Pierce (Pittsburgh, PA) I teach in a top-twenty MBA program where we are encouraged to incorporate discussion across the curriculum about ethical practices in corporate America. Dr. Frederick presents a thorough historical account of the study of corporate ethics that prepares me to guide my students through the current landmine of big-business greed and coverup. I especially appreciate Dr. Frederick's analogies to the natural world--this context makes it easier to understand how seemingly small, inconsequential leadership choices can create overwhelming problems--or successes--as a corporation matures. I will be putting this on my recommended book list for all my students to better understand how they, tomorrow's leaders, can promote value-driven strategies and policies that create respectful environments for their employees, customers, and communities.

William Frederick is the dean of corporate social responsibility. He occupied a front row seat over decades of evolution in corporate values. He simultaneously led the field of study while acting as the principal arbiter of what consistutes the "good" corporation. In my own work as a Wall Street Journal commentator on ethics and values in Corporate America, I stood on a theoretical foundation established by Prof. Frederick. His latest book adds an empirical plank to the theoretical foundation on which two generations of students and corporate leaders now stand. "Corporation, Be Good!" is an accessible and engaging account of the movement by which corporations came to recognize their role not solely as economic instituions, but as social institutions as well.
