Great OB Book February 29, 2008 Wendy Gilbert Our doctor gives this book out to all of her pregnant patients when they come in for their first OB appointment.
Major error in the book that is dangerous to pregnant women January 9, 2008 Serena Leytin (Oakland, CA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
On page 95 of this book, it falsely states: "Tretinoin (Retin-A) and benzoyl peroxide (Benzamycin), which comes in gels or lotions, are a few of the prescription treatments that are safe during pregnancy." Having consulted recently with my dermatologists, in addition to some fact-finding on the internet, I have learned that while benzoyl peroxide is safe, Retin-A in early gestation are considered teratogenic (definition: relating to, or causing malformations of an embryo or fetus) in humans. I personally think that the copywriter of this book should be fired as the consequence of this error is very serious. This book should not be the sole book that pregnant women rely on for information, and readers need to double check their facts.
Great book, very informational November 23, 2007 SRCB (NYC, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A friend recommended this vs "What To Expect". This is my first pregnancy and I am full of questions and worries like any first time mother. I found this book very reassuring and detailed.I am sharing it with my husband so we can both understand what I am experiencing. I will recommended it!
There are better books out there October 1, 2007 Lisa (PA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are definitely better books on pregnancy out there. I got this one for free from my OB, but if I had paid for it, I would have been sorely disappointed. It's got very brief information on a lot of topics around pregnancy & birth, but it's very cut and dry. It truly is like reading a longer pamphlet.
Comprehensive review September 22, 2007 Marinasea (Menlo Park, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a great reference book for pregnant woman that want a scientific and straight forward approach to the steps throughout pregnancy, labor and birth. Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't talk about midwife or alternative birthing centers other than main stream. Well, what do you expect? This book is by the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists not by the American Association of Midwifes. It is my understanding in reading the book that ACOG has enough scientific evidence to believe that alternative birthing centers are not always safe and not for everyone so it would be unfair to have them do a general review on something that needs a specific, case by case basis consideration. And I do believe that if something goes wrong, you have a lower chance of success having a midwife assisting your birth rather than a gynecologist that has gone through 10 years of training in the subject matter.
