Watch Jean Donaldson and Ian Dunbar take on the controversial and often misunderstood concept of dominance behavior in dogs. Do dogs really try to be "the boss"? Learn what science knows, and doesn't know, about canine behavior. A timely subject given the popularity of television shows featuring dogs behaving badly and trainers rehabilitating them--all within an hour! There is an incredible interest in dog behavior and training as evidenced by the growing popularity of TV shows that focus on how to solve problem behaviors. Often, viewers are told that the problem is that their dog is trying to be dominant and that the owner simply needs to assert him/herself as the "leader of the pack". While this may make for compelling TV, dominance in dogs has not been subject to much scientific research. Many dog experts, well schooled in canine learning and behavior, dispute the idea that dominance plays a significant role in pet dog behavior. In this new DVD, leading canine authorities Jean Donaldson and Ian Dunbar take on this sometimes-controversial subject. Does dominance really exist and how does it impact the relationships between dogs and dogs and people and dogs? Do you have to be dominant over your dog to ensure that she is well trained? What does the modern trainer do or say to a client who does not understand why he or she does not train dogs "the way they do on TV"? All of these issues are dealt with in this fascinating, 4+ hour DVD by experts who place more stock in research and empirical results than in explanations based personal experience.

I received this as a gift and will pass it on, seeing it once was enough. Ms. Donaldson's disc is more of a commercial against a certain popular TV dog trainer and offers almost no practical information. Her talking points are not very well put together, ramble and are very amateurish. Mr. Dunbar's was more instructive, although as a long time dog trainer I do not agree with all of his methods. There is some good information in the Dunbar disc if you are interested in all positive training methods. In my experience they don't work with every dog, and there is no information provided for what to do if this method doesn't work for your particular dog. Not bad, but not great either. I don't recommend this to new dog owners or those unfamiliar with dog training.

2 out of 5 stars Jean Donaldson & Ian Dunbar - "Fighting Dominance in a Dog Whispering World"   March 18, 2008

I was very disappointed with the entire disc one of this product; the Jean Donaldson part is something one could glean from a chapter of a book on the science & mythology of dominance theories. Her oration skills are not as professional as one would expect from a so-called-expert, as well.
On the other hand, Dr. Ian Dunbar (as always), is stupendous!!! So only disc two makes the product worth keeping in ones collection. Disc 2 has a total running time of: 1 hour & 47 minutes. He is a brilliant, humorous speaker with very note-worthy examples.

5 out of 5 stars What the Heck is Dominance in Dogs Anyway? (new Title?)   February 29, 2008

Jean Donaldson is all for trainers, this 1st DVD in the set really was wonderful. The tone was one of understanding "Dog Relationships" from a clinical point, where actual scientific studies of groups of dogs were made for many months and years. (not from a myth based airy fog) Far from dry, Jean has an incredible sense of humor! Her delivery makes "Fighting" a moot point.
Dr.Ian Dunbar is a long time scientist, vet and dog trainer. His studies go back to the seventies and his delivery is legendary, no dryness there. He was a pioneer in the changing of behavior in humans to be more humane! The end does get a little long and off subject toward the end, but only as it is the end does it make it feel long.
Both deliver information that should be required watching for all dog trainers and 'wanna be's' Dog training is really about learning theory and how it works. "Dominance" is how the human race makes dogs in their own image! Watch this and pass it on! Lend it to your Vet and groomer and trainer if they haven't seen it!
