4 out of 5 stars We like Wishbone   March 27, 2005

Even though the show is no longer in production, my children love to watch the videos we check out at the library.

This episode tells the story of Tom Sawyer while the parallel story is a mystery about a grave in Oakdale. It's a good plot as usual and both children and adults can enjoy it.

The only problem I have is with the unnecessary political correctness that was so popular at the time the show was made. For some reason the creators felt the need to change the character of Injun Joe into someone called Crazy Joe. I guess they were afraid to offend any Indians. But, of course, they didn't seem to mind offending crazy people.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent re-telling of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer adventures.   December 6, 1998

The Wishbone series features a Jack Russel terrier, Wishbone, who takes various roles in classic tales. The classic tales are told in parallel with a modern story involving the dog and his owner, Joe, a young boy living with his librarian mother. This video features Wishbone in the role of Tom Sawyer, a boy with a lot of spirit who is always looking for adventure. Along with his best friend and partner in crime, Huckleberry Finn, Tom finds himself at his own funeral after he is supposed dead from drowning, witnesses a murder in a graveyard, and triumphs when he finds the buried treasure of a local thief. The Wishbone stories are always very true to the classic tales they tell and are a fantastic way to introduce young people to the classics. Catch the show on your local PBS station.
