Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
A professional dog trainer based in New Hampshire, April Frost offers some no-nonsense advice on training a dog in this instructional video. The system Frost advocates proceeds in logical steps, with the dog being given lessons in a specific order. Among the major commands covered are sit, heel, come, down, and stay, and lessons on how to get a dog to behave when guests come to the door. Frost contends that there are no specific pieces of training equipment that are required, yet she does offer some useful guidance on choosing collars, leashes, and a 30-foot training line. The proper way to put a metal training collar on a dog is described with some detail--the collar (often mistakenly called a choke collar) must be put on the dog safely. A group of dogs and handlers appear as Frost's class in this video, and the lessons are presented clearly. Important tips, such as the proper use of treats as a reward, are provided. The camera work is professional throughout and thankfully avoids flashiness, which would be a distraction. This is a solid introduction to dog training, and a viewer who takes the lessons seriously could benefit greatly from Frost's tutelage. --Robert J. McNamara

1 out of 5 stars No choke chains!   April 18, 2006

I totally agree with the reviewer who opposes the use of choke chains. Any trainer who still advocates this method is way behind the times. For that reason alone, I would not buy this video.

This was an excellent video for first time dog owners and trainers. The directions are clear and the contect is clear. Great job!

3 out of 5 stars Good points and not so good points   June 28, 2003

I found this video very informative. However, the corrections done using the choke chains are misleading. She only uses large dogs with lots of fur. No where in the video does she suggest how to properly use a choke chain on small breed dogs. Judging by the way the "pop-and-release" method was used on these large dogs, serious damage would be done to a small breed dog. Other lessons, however, not using the choke chain were a good source of information. I will definitely use this video as a refresher of how to train.

4 out of 5 stars Well presented, practical training   January 26, 2003

April Frost is the real thing, a trainer who not only knows how to train dogs, but knows how to communicate her training methods in a clear fashion. The tape is very well organized into 'sections', and the camerawork and editing are very well done. You really see what she's talking about as she works with the dogs and people in her class -- just like being there! This video has been selling on Amazon.com for a few years now and I can see why. Nothing is as good as actually going to a class, but this is as close as you get.

1 out of 5 stars No Choke Chain by any other name   July 18, 2002

Any dog trainer who advocates the a choke chain is way behind the curve in current animal training thought. The classical study done post mortem comparing dogs trained with choke chains
to prong collars showed much more damage done to the necks of
the choke chain trained dogs.

I'd give it a -10 if I could.
