5 out of 5 stars Wonderful companion to the Book   April 28, 2003

I love this video!! Brian Kilcommons is a very common sence teacher in that he "trains" us, the dog owners first on how to train our dog. Often it's the owner that needs some training first. I was doing EVERYTHING wrong and was about to give our big dog (that was literally ripping the house to pieces,)back to the shelter until we got this video and the companion book. Good Owners, Great Dogs. also by Brian Kilcommons
You can tell that Brian absolutely loves animals and he is often featured on the "Animal Planet" working with animal shelters to train dogs that have been brought back two and three times. When he's finished in a VERY short time, they're very happy, well trained dogs and when they get adopted out, they DON'T come back.
He shows the new owners how to carry on with the training.
And he is very humane, firm, but humane. No hitting or screaming at all.
The video shows you step by step how to train your dog, the tone of voice to take, what mistakes NOT to make. And the book takes over where the video left off, covering extra subjects and situations that the video didn't have time to go into detail with.
Within a week, our big dog was obeying 80% of our commands.
That was four years ago and right now I'm looking at a HUGE well behaved dog lying calmly at my feet by the computer. He doesn't touch ANYTHING in the house now and obeys our commands. He is just a very happy well behaved dog. I have recommended the video and book to so many people who thought it was hopeless and not one failed so far to train their puppy or older dog to be well behaved and very happy. Dogs that are trained firmly and humanely, as in the Kilcommons way, are about the happiest dogs you've ever seen. Our vet always comments on how HAPPY our dog is. We love him to death. It frightens me to think that we almost gave him back to the shelter. My sister trained her shelter dog that was 6 years old when she got her, in two weeks, with the video and book. The dog was never trained at all before she got her, but now she does everything my sister tells her to do.
It takes a bit longer with older dogs but even they too are almost always able to be trained. They seem happy that finally someone is taking the time to understand them.
Please don't just get a puppy or older dog and try to train them by "hit and miss" or by hitting them or doing nothing at all. Get the video, and book and be consistant and you won't beleive what your dog will do for you. A dog you were ready to take to the shelter or maybe even have put to sleep, will turn out to be the best behaved dog on the block.
Your neighbors will be in awe. Give it a try first. It will be the best money you ever spent on your pet. Even kids can watch the video and read the book and train them. The whole family should watch the video and read the book together.
Now, if only they could write a book on child rearing that was this easy and successful.

This video is very easy to understand even for your children. There are many good tips and Brian Kilcommons covers all most every thing you need to know.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and concise training video   February 24, 2000

Brian Kilcommons shows very clearly how to train a dog to obey your commands. Basics such as "come", "down", "sit", "leave it" and many other commands are taught in a simple and easy to learn manner. Nothing confusing about this video. This video is for the family dog, not for showing or jumping. My wife and I highly recommend this video for basic behavioral training.
