Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Gentle Leader Headcollar allows you to communicate with your dog in a way that he instinctively understands, translating your requests into "dog language", telling him that you are the leader. The nose loop encircles your dog's muzzle in the same way that a "pack leader" gently but firmly grasps a subordinate's muzzle in his mouth. This is a clear signal to your dog that you are his leader. The neck strap puts pressure on the back of the neck, working with your dog's "opposition reflex" (the natural instinct of dogs to push against pressure, rather than move away). Traditional collars put pressure on the front of the throat, causing dogs to keep pulling even while choking. Gentle Leader's patented design places 80% of the pressure at the back of the neck, taking advantage of the opposition reflex. Your dog will instinctively lean back against the pressure, putting an end to leash pulling forever. Where the nose goes, the body follows. That's why halters are used on horses, it takes very little strength to control a large animal by the head versus the neck. If your dog tries to pull ahead, simply hold the leash firmly and his nose and head turn back to look at you, making it virtually impossible for him to drag you down the street. Dogs feel more secure when they have a firm, gentle leader (that's you). Many experts and owners report the amazing calming effect that Gentle Leader has in helping shy, nervous, or fearful dogs to relax and gain greater confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Great product!   November 16, 2008
Aly Hyrkas (Champaign, IL United States)
Both my trainer and my vet recommend this product. I have had good luck with this product with both a 62-lb retriever and an 18-lb beagle. I need them to walk quietly by my side as I am training them to hopefully be therapy dogs. This device helps me bring their attention back to me. They don't like it, because I'm now in charge, not them, but it doesn't hurt them. They would rather go chase after the squirrel, but now they can't pull me with them when they catch the scent. I wouldn't be able to walk them with out this as I'm only 5'3 and would have a hard time controlling one of my dogs much less both of them at once. It's like a horse halter which has been used for quite some time. It also works great to help keep my dog from jumping on people. No other product has been able to help. I bought all of mine from my trainer, but the price here is about the same.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a huge, stubborn puppy   October 31, 2008
Jitney John (New Orleans)
Our seven month old chow-shepherd-lab mix will still occasionally fight the harness and try to shake it off, but after three days he's already 85% better about not pulling, and my shoulder no longer hurts.

I rarely write reviews & when I do they are usually negative.
This harness is the greatest thing since sliced bread!
Instead of "water skiing" behind my dog she now walks with slack on the leash. She doesn't like it because it makes me the boss but it works nonetheless and it worked automatically/magically, very little training required. Hard to believe that 50 cents woth of nylon & plastic could make such a difference. Now walks are really enjoyable. If you have a problem with a dog that pulls, I emplore you to try this! It's a life changing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Works Great   September 18, 2008
C. Hathaway (Mesquite, Nevada)
I recently adopted an 80 pound German Sheppard, she had no previous training, and would pull on the leash and give me blisters. I had tied a flat collar, a choke chain, a slip leash and nothing controlled her. That is until I tried the Gentle Lead. Within 5 minutes it was like she trained herself. It took very little effort on my part, plus the training video is am must to see. It explains how to use the lead without hurting your dog. It is Great, Maggie is a totally different dog and she learned this without any pulling or pain. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Effective   July 21, 2008
Brandy (Seattle, WA USA)
I've used the headcollar on several dogs over the years, after it was recommended by a professional trainer. I've used it on dogs from 50-120 lbs with positive results. In each case it caused a vast improvement in each dog's walking behavior almost instantly. Our current dog may have been mishandled before we adopted him, and came to us with some undesirable tendencies. It can take years to overcome these issues. My dog can easily tug an adult off his/her feet with a leash attached to his collar because he is so excited to be out and ready to go, go, go. With the Leader, however, he's just as excited (he shoves his nose into the loop, eager to get it on), but stays completely under control, which is important for his safety, as well as those around us. He wasn't entirely pleased with it in the beginning, but within a week learned the appropriate behaviors to eliminate any discomfort. It helps him focus, and he is better able to listen. He's very excited when new people come into our house too, so I use the Leader and a leash then and it curbs his tendency to try to jump into the arms of the visitor. It's so much more humane than chokers or those spike collars. I don't know where we would be without it.
