As a pioneer of Cubism, much of artistic virtuoso Pablo Picassos vast body of work was composed of pieces that were bold and complex, but he always drew animals with a gentle hand. The Dog, thought to be a portrait of his beloved dachshund, Lump (German for rascal), who died one week before the artist himself, is the most well-known of all his animal drawings. Picasso (1881-1973) created a prolific 20,000 paintings, prints, sculptures and drawings during his lifetime. He adored animals, and dogs were frequently portrayed in his work. The minimalist drawing technique Picasso used on The Dog was a style he also used in drawing doves, flowers, butterflies and owls, perhaps to symbolize the simple, innocent purity of nature.
Hes not a dog, hes not a little man, hes somebody else.
