5 out of 5 stars It's Worth the Peace of Mind - Small and Light   February 11, 2008

You'll never know how valuable this device is until you need it, but I feel better knowing that I am now better prepared for some various car disasters. The keychain is very light and of a small enough size that I don't think it adds much to my usual set of keys and pocket knife. I think it is a lot more practical than the full-size LifeHammer which would require you to mount that device to your car. This keychain version allows you to have it on you in case you are the passenger in somebody else's car. I also recommend that anybody who purchases this device actually rehearse what they would need to do prior to an actual disaster. Another reviewer mentioned the Discovery channel's series MythBusters. There is an episode where they test various strategies inside a car that they submerge into a swimming pool. I highly recommend you try to find that episode and watch it and go to other sites. Being mentally prepared without this device is better than being mentally unprepared even with this device. So the device is excellent for what it is, a simple tool and not a complete solution.

5 out of 5 stars Just as described   February 5, 2008

I received this product in a timely manner and it was exactly as described. Thankfully, I have not had to use it but it will come in handy if the need ever arises! They are a little big for my husbands ksychain, so I am not sure what he will do with it.

4 out of 5 stars Haven't tested it in real life   December 27, 2007

... Fluorescent yellow makes for good visibility. Punch is easy to press but has good impact.
... Don't test too much, especially on hard surfaces (glass, hard wood, metal). You don't want to dull the point, reducing it's effectiveness.
... But do test two or three times on something soft (plywood, pine), as someone else mentioned quality control might be an issue. You want to find out now, not later, if there's a manufacturing flaw.
... Even if you have the LifeHammer, I highly recommend having one of these on your keychain. You never know what vehicle you'll be in, or what circumstances.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Case Scenario   December 7, 2007

Imagine giving this device to your 16 year old. Imagine he encounters circumstances to put it to use. Now imagine it fails to work. How would you feel about your gift?

I ordered 6 of these as Christmas stocking-stuffers. Fortunately, my 16 year old tested the glass breaking function of his on a piece of scrap hard plastic.

No matter how hard we tried we couldn't get the pin to 'pop'. The barrel simply moved in and out with no effect.

I handed him another. The pin popped as it should but then remained stuck in the extended position. In actual use that would have meant one try to break the glass and then the device would have been useless.

I tested the remaining 4 and they did, in fact, function as advertised and demonstrated. I don't think a device like this ought to have what basically amounts to a 33% failure rate on the 6 I purchased.

If you buy them, TEST them. Then consider installing the full-sized hammer as a back-up.

1 out of 5 stars don't waste your money   October 23, 2007

Do not waste your money buying this item. I tested it on various glass surfaces and it did not perform well, it didn't even puncture skin.
