A waste of time and money for a piece of cryptonic crud August 7, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
To say this battery booster is a worthless piece of crud is too kind of an understatement. On a scale of 1 to 5, this is a -10. The one star I've given is 11 stars too many. Though worthless, I have to spend money to return it. I also wasted valuable time searching for it, reading the reviews (I was warned wasn't I) charging it, trying to make it work, recharging it, not to mention wasting my good typing skills writing this review to warn others not to spend time or money on this piece of cryptonic crud. The charger arrives half charged. The manual says to charge for 15 hours before using but the indicator light said it was fully charged when I plugged it in. I let it charge a few hours anyway and tried to start the car. I got beeps and blinking lights that meant charge it some more so I did. After a full 24 hours of charging I tried it again and got similar results. Initially, I followed directions exactly. Then I changed the recommended sequence to see if it would work that way. Then I charged some more and tried it again to no avail. All I get is beeps when I hit the booster button. It doesn't even blink like like it did at first. Additionally, the light doesn't come on anymore. It did the first time I charged but it seems the more it's charged, the less it does.
PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THE NEGATIVE REVIEWERS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT OR CAN'T FOLLOW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS. The problem is just that this is a piece of junk. When I asked for the item at Pep Boys, the guy told me they didn't sell it anymore because they had too many returns. I'm kicking myself for not listening to him and all the folks on amazon that said it was worthless.
Use Accessory Outlet instead of Cigarette Lighter July 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was skeptical about this product because of all the negative reviews, but was in a position where it was about the only thing that would work for me. I had a car battery that wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few hours and a broken hood release cable, so I couldn't give it a normal jump-start.
The next day, the car wouldn't start. I tried the product in the cigarette lighter with the key turned to the accessory setting as instructed and nothing happens. I'm thinking "Oh crap, this is just great. I've got a dead battery and I can't even jump-start it!" Then I remembered the accessory outlet in the center console. I hooked it up there and within about 7 minutes, the car started and it was on my way!
Bad design !PLUS! the wrong solution to the dead battery problem July 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This product is a big disappointment. I bought one of these and took it back because of the constant beeping noise it made as it tried to recharge. The second one charged OK twice over a few months and then started making the same beeping noise. There is something very wrong with the design here.
Don't kid yourself, or your wife, or your daughter, or your mother: even when working perfectly this is a pretty high-risk solution to the problem of a dead battery. If the battery ends up being very dead, or is worn out, or is in very cold conditions, it just isn't possible to trickle enough additional charge into it in 15-20 minutes to start an engine. You need to use one of those very large power supplies capable of starting a car by themselves, by bypassing your existing battery. Or use a set of jumper cables and another car--it isn't very difficult, it's much faster, and more reliably successful.
Now, IF you get one of these Simple Starts that charges correctly, it would do OK as a power source for 12 volt devices like cellphone chargers and portable DVD players. But that's it. Is it worth the weight?
Please note that virtually every reviewer who has anything nice to say about it has a single review to their name. I presume they are all relatives of Mr. Black or Mr. Decker.
don't waste your money July 18, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
purchased this item and needed to charge a car battery about 3 weeks later but the unit didn't work. returned it for replacement and that unit also did not work. the charger sounds great in concept, nice design and features, easy to use buttons and controls but all of this won't get you moving when your car battery is dead. it has been a long time since i have purchased an item that performed so badly. didn't even bother returning the second unit - i have wasted enought time with this useless device.
Crappiest product I ever bought July 13, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this battery charger and then I used it to start up one of my cars. I followed the instructions to the last word and it wouldn't work at all. The old fashion one seems to do a better job. So I advice anyone not to buy this thing.
