5 out of 5 stars Works Great For Me! Mystified By Negative Reviews.   July 1, 2008

I use the Simple Start at work. We have these trucks that are equipped with way too much electronics and to save money the owners didn't want to upgrade the stock 12v battery charging system. Consequently, if a truck goes unused for longer than 1 day the trickle drain on the battery knocks it out so you can't start the vehicle with out a lot of trouble and assistance. But not for me! I charge the Simple Start up over the weekend, plug it into the lighter outlet, let it charge the battery for 15 min. and the truck starts every Monday morning. I love it. Now you have to be careful about following the instructions. When you plug in the Simple Start and hit the 'charge' button, you have to be sure the power is going to the 12v battery. Usually this means putting the car key in the accessory position. It works so well for me and I'm so satisfied with it, it's hard to understand other reviewers problems with it.

1 out of 5 stars Mine was DOA, yours will be too!!   June 19, 2008

It sounds like a great Idea, If it has worked I would have ordered one for each or my cars. I have a traditional portable battery booster which is still going strong 5 years later, but it never seems to be in the car when I need it.

Ordered this for myself for fathers day with some gift certificates, took supersaver shipping and it arrived in less than 2 weeks.

Unit arrived, read instructions which state unit is partially charged but must be charged further before use.
Instructions state, press on button before you plug it in, and green light will come on.
That did not happen, plugged it in for an hour anyway. At the end of an hour it was still dead do called the 800 number to talk to some 3rd party Customer Service person, He did not work for B&D.
Nice gentleman on the other end said, "Oh we get a lot of calls about that unit. It's either beeping constantly or does not work at all, either way you should return it to where you got it.

Good Luck,
I'll be making sure all our cars have jumper cables.

1 out of 5 stars Great concept - Poor execution   June 14, 2008

I purchased three of these items for each member of my family. These are small compact units and not too heavy. My feeling was that my wife could handle the Simple Start system with ease should the need ever arise. Unfortunately, within one year all three Black & Decker Battery Boosters fail to hold a charge. I wrote to the Black & Decker company regarding this situation and never received the courtesy of a reply. In conclusion: a great concept with poor execution in material longevity and product customer service.

2 out of 5 stars an okay product   May 21, 2008

I've only had this product for a short while and I've discovered a few interesting things about it. It does work for starting a car with a weak battery. It DOES NOT work if the battery is dead.

I have a car that I don't use very often so the battery can get weak or even dead if I don't use it every few weeks. When trying to start the car I found that the device works okay only if the battery still has some life in it. So it's of limited use for what I really wanted to use it for. When I plugged it in while the battery was dead it just keeps beeping (which means something isn't right.)

Now if you want to use it for other purpose it's a fine device as the light works fine and I'm sure the other parts work fine too. It's just not a good fit for how I wanted to use it.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for Me!   May 9, 2008

I don't have time for an extensive review but this product worked for us. Our car (Dodge Neon 2003) is fairly old (90K+ miles) and we haven't been driving it as much because we want it to last longer in case of emergencies. Well we left it undriven for too long (about 3 weeks) and the battery died. We couldn't start it.

So we bought this, charged it, stuck it in the lighter outlet for 15 minutes and boom: the car starts. The car has been fine ever since.

One thing: in order for it to work, I had to turn the car onto "accessory" mode by turning the key a little bit so that the radio was on (this piece of advice is in the instructions that come with the device). It wouldn't charge unless I did that. I suspect this may be the problem for some other reviewers.
