5 out of 5 stars Cesar's Way   April 16, 2008

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

I recently became the owner of a four year old Standard Poodle (named Blinky). The minute Blinky walked in the door it became very clear that it wanted to be the boss and run the show. As time progressed Blinky became more assertive and was dictating to me what the routine was. Corrective action was urgently needed. I had never heard of Cesar Millan before but decided to puchase the book based on other reviews I read.
I have found the book to be brillant and have quickly achieved remarkable results with Blinky. I now clearly understand the importance of demonstrating to Blinky that I am the pack leader and NOT treating Blinky like she is a human. I have read some negative comments about Cesar Millan's tranining methods but all I can say is that they work and I have not had to spend hundreds of dollars going to a dog training specialist.

5 out of 5 stars Owner's Manual For Your Dog   April 11, 2008

I recently purchased a pure-bred Standard Schnauzer and was looking for a source to help me get the most out of my relationship with my pet. Luckily I do not take delivery on this animal until early June because I needed to read this masterpiece by "The Dog Whisperer" of Nat. Geo. fame to disabuse myself of some erroneous notions about dog ownership.

Cesar's Way will one day go down as a classic work on dog behavior/animal communication. Mr. Millan, drawing on years of anecdotal experience with canines, illustrates in "human terms" just what makes our four-legged friends tick.

Problems with our furry friends arise when we relate to them using human psychology as our frame of reference instead of "dog psychology." What exactly "dog psychology" is, I'll leave it to this wonderful book to enlighten you. Suffice to say, it is NOT the way you would think one would care for your beloved four-legged member of your family.

Written with wit, compassion, but unapologetically (Cesar is "pro-dog"), Cesar's Way has heightened my anticipation; I am anxious to see how my relationship with my beloved Otto von Schnauzen evolves over the weeks, months, and years. As his "pack leader," it is encumbant upon me to meet his needs, and not simply look to him to meet some deep, lost emotional need.

Cesar Millan has done a great service to the animal kingdom, and the well-being of dogs everywhere with this wonderful, enlightening book. I highly recommend this book as an "owner's manual" for your dog. This is a book you're likely to read time and again. I, personally, am on my third reading.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money   April 7, 2008

Just the fact that he has correcting has the title of the book puts me off. More so Cesar is not into teaching anything to any dog rather focused on punishing them and making the owners feel they are "in contro". The set backs and consequences of this type of training dogs are immense and never once mentioned on his book leaving the reader feeling that all these techniques are efective when really they are nothing but abusive and uninformed.

I found this book to be extremely eye opening. Although a lot of what I read didn't make me happy, it does make total sense. I was hoping it would tell you how to become more calm assertive, but I think Be The Pack Leader might do that more. I would definetely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Cesar's way, the logical way...   March 28, 2008

Cesar Millan is truly in tune with dogs.

This is one fantastic book, not loaded down with an autobiography or given over to "name dropping" of celebrities.

Millan is so transparently a down to earth, real time guy who has what it takes to communicate with dogs and to pass on that knowledge to their human owners.

Millan's techniques, while ridiculed by other lesser "behaviourists" or "trainers", get to the heart of the matter immediately with no "fluffing" of the situation.

The techniques used by Millan are completely dog friendly, non threatening, non invasive and are not cruel to the animal.

In a truly professional manner, Millan assesses each dog on its own situation - he does not have a "1 solution fits all" approach to the animals, simply because that cannot and does not work.

Millan, correctly, describes his subjects as "Animal, dog, breed, name" and subtly shows that the owners or handlers can also be categorised the same way, "Animal, homo-sapien, Caucasian/Asian/Latin, name". If owners can see that, then the relationship between man and dog becomes so much more "calm".

Millan is one of the true geniuses of the dog world. Other trainers, sit up and take note. Treat a dog like a dog and suddenly the balance of the relationship equalises. It is so simple, all it takes is that basic understanding.

Highly recommended and highly readable.
