Pretty much works as you'd expect September 9, 2010 Tezza (USA) The unit was pretty easy to setup. Within an hour I'd fine tuned the distance so that the boundary would be a few feet short of the front street.
We have a steeply sloped back yard and the unit seemed to handle that okay.
We replaced a "wired" invisible fence with this wireless one, so the dog knew what was "going down" from the minute it saw the new collar and flags. No training required.
At first our dog hung out pretty close to the house but within a week it was testing the perimeter. I must say our perimeter isn't a perfect circle. It's sort of like a large inexact, slightly varying circle. Probably due to how much house and other junk is between the transmitter and the perimeter.
All in all the unit has worked well and eliminated the need for wires. The area the dog is confined to is smaller than our original wired perimeter, but it's where the dog spends 90 percent of it's time anyways.
The batteries are much cheaper for this unit than another "name brand" wired unit. The collar, however, looks a little cheaper than the unit we had.
All in all, it's an acceptable solution and beats hunting for wires and fixing breaks all the time.
What a lifesaver, literally August 30, 2010 Michigal (Maine) Well, I read all 200+ reviews before purchasing this product, but finally did, and must say I'm totally pleased with it. I have around 5 acres of property on a busy road, and have just recently rescued a Lab. I cannot fence the property, due to wetlands, ledge, forest, septic field, hills and dips, and cost, and was taking her out on a leash to do her business. While that's fine for now, but come winter in Maine, I didn't relish the thought of traipsing in the snow.
I received the system, and realized I would have to train to the audible alert, because the flags would not be visible under the snow here in Maine. So that's one warning to everyone considering this excellent system. And there should be directions on how to do this in the instructions for those who might not have a clue, but there aren't, so I set up the flags for my knowledge of the boundaries, but did not call her attention to them. It took only one session for Jess to learn. Knowing the dog is helpful, but I found the number 2 setting wasn't more irritating than a flea bite. I put it at 3 and that definitely got her attention. We went to two areas along the boundary, and she received a shock, and since then will turn back as soon as she hears the beeps.
Siting the transmitter is very important, and checking the whole area is advisable. I read some reviews stating that sometimes it would go off in the middle of the set area, and yes, it did happen to me. At that point I was walking a grid with the collar attached to my leg at her neck level, and on level 2. I highly recommend you do something like that to locate any problem areas.
So I moved to the transmitter to the basement, fairly high up from the floor (about 4 ft), and that took care of the problem. I have a walkout basement, with the level 10 feet lower than the front of the house, and a built up septic field on the other side, somewhat higher. I found no problems with the coverage, every area is covered, and I think that's because all interference (wireless router, computers, tvs, etc.) are upstairs and there's really nothing down.
One slight idiosyncrasy I noted was that some areas have a longer warning area (4 ft) and some have a way shorter length (1 ft). Again, it's probably because of the layout of the land, and it's not a problem if you train to the tones rather than the flags. Also be aware the distance might fluctuate. It's not an issue for me, but for those on city lots it very well could be. Test it every now and then with a grid walk.
I've also read the built in power failure detector isn't reliable, so it might be worthwhile to buy a small UPS dedicated to the product. We have an automatic generator, but there's still about 45 secs. before it kicks in. The other issue for some people may be the collar. While it's fine for larger dogs like Jess, I really can't see an 8 pound dog wearing it. Fortunately, one can use your own collar for it, using the holes in the original as a template.
All in all, this is a lifesaver for us. I'd lost my very special dog to the busy road when she escaped, and I only wish I'd known about this product a couple of years ago. Highly recommended.
Worked Well for Us... be careful not to leave it on though... August 25, 2010 Daniel M. Galdenzi 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read all the reviews and I think because my house is a newer build and my yard is flat, PetSafe worked great. Couple of things to be careful about:
1- I have a High Energy Pitbull mix breed and she was completely terrified on the 3 (2-6) setting. The directions say set it at 6 for High Energy dogs, but I don't recommend it. The warning beeps work very well to get your dog back in the perimeter.
2- If your dog does get past the line it just shocks them non stop outside of the zone, and your dog may not know to come back to the yard perimeter and just gets shocked consistently. So I don't recommend leaving them unattended too long.
3- Be sure to take the collar off indoors in case there is a power outage or a battery issue, otherwise she will get shocked.
I recommend this product but you have to a be a responsible pet owner and not just assume once she's trained its all good from there.
Very Pleased August 21, 2010 ronnie p This wireless containment system almost works too good. Our little dachshund would not stay in the yard, would run in the street and chased every animal and every person that went by. After getting this system she will not leave the yard and after a little over a month, we don't even have to put the collar on her anymore!! Once she received the shock correction a few times, she would not leave the yard again. There are six levels of shock to adjust on the the collar. I tried it on myself first to see what it feels like and determined #3 was best for my dog. The collar gives the dog a warning first by beeping and if the dog continues forward gives the shock until they come back behind the boundary. Your yard should be relatively flat with no dips or dropoffs for this to work well. The transmitter is silent and once turned on, draws an invisible circle around where it is placed. The size of the circle can be adjusted. If you have real close neighbors this probably won't work well cause even on the smallest adjustment it will still allow the dog into your neighbors yard somewhat. My neighbor is okay with it & I live on a corner lot so this worked perfect for me. I bought the system used on Amazon & all the parts were there and it was easy to set up & the dog was trained in no time. I was able to get rid of the cable tie out we used to use that got wrapped around everything. Now we just let her out the door!!!
Does not work, not recommended August 16, 2010 MKO I followed all directions, but one side of my house will not work. I have moved the unit. I have turned the unit and I have reset the unit. My dog can walk right between my neighbors house and our house with no response from the unit. When she comes back into the yard the collar beeps. Several times the collar just quits working for no reason. I then have to reset everything. Now I cant get it to work at all. Yes I have changed the batteries.
