Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Now in a two-volume Fourth Edition, this internationally acclaimed "gold standard" is the leading text in veterinary ophthalmology. The book offers unparalleled coverage of disease and treatment of the animal eye, including both medical and surgical management of ophthalmic problems in domestic, exotic and laboratory species. For anyone with a special interest in veterinary or comparative ophthalmology, Veterinary Ophthalmology is an essential reference and a key addition to any specialist library.

With a host of international authors and full color illustrations throughout, the new edition carries on the tradition of excellence established in earlier editions. Highlights of the Fourth Edition include new discussions of noninvasive imaging technology, gene and gene-mutation DNA tests for inherited retinal degenerations, and expanded chapters on equine and feline ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, and ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease. Chapters on ophthalmic pathology, canine eyelid disease and surgery, canine glaucoma, lens and cataract surgery, and canine vitreoretinal surgery have also been significantly revised by new authors.

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential resource for veterinary ophthalmology   March 27, 1999

A worthy successor to the previous edition with contributions from many leaders in their respective fields and several new sections. Should be on the bookshelf of anyone serious about veterinary ophthalmology.

5 out of 5 stars the definitive text but long (1500p) and heavy (4.5kg)!   March 26, 1999

Gelatt has produced the definitive text which is without doubt a magnum opus. It is, however, very long and somewhat repetitive since the same topic is covered in several chapters rather than having one place to which all other chapters refer. This is good if you are revising from it, since it forces you to read slightly different accounts of the same material but not good if you want a quick reference which tells you all you need to know. Different chapters don't always agree and the index doesn't always lead you to each entry for a subject (take ligneous conjunctivitis for example which isn't in the index at all). There are some outright mistakes (keratin where it really means keratan in the cornea chapter for instance) which is a shame in a text that will be the definitive text for years to come. Neverthless every veterinary ophthalmologist will need to buy it - but veterinary surgeons in practice might find it a bit to much to be really useful unless they wanted to really research a topic in great detail. Having said all that this is the place to go if you want to know what's right up to date in veterinary ophthalmology, for basic science, canine ophthalmology in depth, feline, equine, exotic and lab animal, even poultry ophthalmology. If it is known at present it's in there!
