This CRC publication on the parasite Dirofilaria immitis is extremely thorough. It covers all aspects of the parasite, including taxonomy, biochemistry, pathology, diagnosis, treatment and chapters on feline and human infections. It also includes excellent drawings, photomicrographs and radiographs. Each chapter is authored by a well-recognized expert in the field. The book is a very complete and well referenced compilation of current knowledge on canine heartworm. And yes, although it is 12 years old (1988) it is still current.
